Welcome!
I am Ricky Yang
Greetings to Everyone!
Hi, thank you for dropping by!
My name is Ricky Yang Qinhong (ć¨éŚĺŽďź, and Iâm currently a Primary 6 student at ĺŁĺŠ´ĺ°ĺŚHoly Innocents’ Primary School (HIPS).Â
I am the CCA Captain and a school team player in the HIPS badminton team. Read about my badminton journey here.
I am also a Scout at Colugo Scout Group. My last appointment was Assistant Sixer of my six. Read about my scouting journey here.
I would say that I am a happy, go lucky carefree kid, who is always curious to try out new things.
In my free time, I enjoy reading the Murderous Maths books. My favourite story book series is the Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson, followed by the Heroes of Olympus.
I am also an avid gamer, I play Pokemon Unite and Nintendo games such as Mario Party with my family on weekends.
My family and I also enjoy playing board games together. We used to play almost everyday when I was younger. My favorite board games are Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game, Monopoly and Splendor.
I love solving Rubik's cubes. My personal best for the 3x3 Rubik's cube is 57 seconds. I am still trying to improve this timing. I am able to solve 2x2, 3x3, 4x4, void cube, square 1, pyraminx, and skewb. Recently my father asked me to teach him how to solve the 3x3 Rubik's cube, which I was very happy to do. Watch this random Rubik's Cube Leaderboard Challenge at NUS High in 2025.
During the school holidays, my parents always make it a point to bring us for a holiday, so we could see the world. I am grateful to have travelled to many countries since I was young. My last trip was to China (Shanghai & Hong Kong) in 2024.Â
Science has always been a big part of my curiosity. I enjoy learning how things work. I had always been curious in the manufacturing process of consumer products. I enjoy watching Youtube videos where they show you what happens behind the scenes in a factory. After my experience in the Science Buskers 2024 and the 3R Car Derby, I realized that I also enjoyed sharing about Science and how things work.Â
I enjoy solving challenging problems and puzzles. I enjoy the Murderous Math series very much. I highly recommend anyone with interest in Math to read the entire series, it is funny and witty!
I had the opportunity to learn coding when I was younger. Over the years, coding and programming have become something I truly enjoy, as they give me the power to build games and apps from my own imagination. I hope that one day, I will be able to create useful apps and solutions for my community. Checkout the street market business simulation. I recently programmed using Python.Â
To me, innovation means turning ideas into real solutions that make life better or more interesting. During the Primary 6 disciplinary project, my team designed a game using recycled materials, and Iâm proud that it was voted the best by our classmates. We even came in 2nd among all the Primary 6 classes. I learned that having a great idea isnât enough, you also need to be brave, promote your work, and understand your audience. That experience helped me see how science, creativity, and entrepreneurship can all come together. Checkout my innovation and tech journey here.Â
My parents have always believed that academics are not everything. Perhaps because they have been involved in startups and have built their own businesses since graduating from university. Through their journey, they have seen that success does not just come from having good grades, but from qualities like creativity, problem-solving, perseverance, and the courage to take risks.
From a young age, they encouraged me to follow my passions, to take pride in what I do, enjoy life experiences, and not to be overly focus on academics. They gave me the freedom to explore and grow at my own pace.
I also want to mention someone else important to me, my younger brother, Ronnie. He may be younger, but heâs definitely not smaller, he is officially heavier than me starting 2025! Even though I am the older one, I have learned a lot from him. Watching how determined he is in everything he does has taught me to be more driven and to put quality and effort into everything I pursue.
Towards the end of Primary 5, I started to think more seriously about my future. That year, I received my first Edusave Certificate of Academic Achievement. Although it was a proud moment, I felt that my results could still be better. That was when my father gave me an advice I still remember: “If you want to choose the school you truly like and study what you’re passionate about, you need to start working harder for it.”
From that point on, I made a decision to study with more focus. I wanted to give my best for PSLE, and give myself the chance to grow into the person I hope to become.
Moments That Shaped Me
The day I was born! đśđť
An interesting fact about this is that, I was born at 36 weeks and 6 days! That is 1 day short of being a full term baby. Most babies are born at 40 weeks. Nevertheless, my body, heart and soul are fully functioning.Â
Started walking at 17 months đŁ
My father always joke that I only started walking when I was 17 months! That is crazy, because my brother was able to walk by 11 months. My mom says that it was because they loved to carry me so much that I couldn’t learn to walk on my own back then.Â
My brother was born đ¤´đť
This is my little brother. He is not so little because he is huge, almost like Hulk. Even though he is younger than me, I have learnt a lot from him as his older brother. One thing in particular was to be more driven and deliver quality in what I do.Â

Started Primary School đŤ
Unlike most parents that would move to a new house to enter a primary school. My father said that there was no way he would do that! So we applied to the school that was close to our home, and that was Holy Innocents’ Primary School (HIPS). I was fortunate to get in as the school became quite popular in the following years. Over the years, HIPS has inculcated in me the key values of Sincerity, Charity, Graciousness, Integrity, Self-Discipline and Resilience. To me, integrity is the most close to my heart. I believe in always being honest with others and honest to myself.
Started Badminton đ¸
I joined the HIPS Badminton CCA in Primary 3. We were given 2 choices to select our CCA, at that time, I chose badminton and robotics. However, after much thoughts, I told my mom to call the school to tell them I wanted both choices to be badminton as I really wanted to get into the badminton CCA. That was how my badminton journey began!
Since then, badminton has taught me grit, resilience, and discipline. It has helped me become more aware of myself and the people around me. Over time, it also gave me the chance to grow as a leader and team player.
Read about my badminton journey here.
Started Scoutingđď¸
In January 2024, my brother and I joined the Colugo Scout Pack, an open Scout group. My mother encouraged us to try Scouting so we could enjoy outdoor activities while building important life skills and character. We began our Scouting journey with a memorable hike at Pulau Ubin on a rainy, stormy morning.
Scouting has helped me grow in many ways. Iâve become more adaptable, improved my social skills, and strengthened my character. I now live by the Scout Promise and Law, to always do my best, help others, be trusted and loyal, make friends, stay disciplined, and have courage. Read more about how Scouting has helped shape who I am today.
'Most Interesting Car' in 3R Car Derby Competitionđď¸
I participated in the South Area Cub Scout 3R Car Derby 2024 and came in 1st for the “Most Interesting Car” category. I had to explain how I made the car with recycled materials and how my car was powered using science concepts. Read more about how I prepared for the 3R Car Derby.
Appointed CCA Captain
At the start of 2025, when I started Primary 6, I was delighted when I was given the opportunity to serve as CCA captain of the HIPS badminton team. My badminton journey has not been easy, so this role felt especially meaningful. It reaffirmed my commitment to the sport and gave me the chance to grow as a leader. As CCA Captain, I helped my teachers take attendance, looked after my juniors, and guided them to train with discipline and teamwork. This experience taught me the importance of responsibility, patience, and leading by example.
Cub Scout Leadership Camp
During the March 2025 school holidays, I was selected by Colugo Scout Pack to join the Cub Scout Leadership Camp (CSLC) – Camp Leaping Wolf 2025. This event gave me another opportunity to develop my leadership skills, learn to serve and care for others, and find new and meaningful ways to make a positive impact in my community. I’m grateful for all that I’ve learned through Scouts, and this experience has made me even more confident and committed as a young leader. Read my experience here.
Tan Kah Kee Young Inventors'
In April 2025, after several months of research, planning, ideation, testing and refining, I finally submitted my creation ClipCatch⢠to participate in the Tan Kah Kee Young Inventorsâ Award (TKKYIA) 2025. I am excited to see if I could be shortlisted for this award! Read about my TKKYIA journey part 1 and part 2.

Update (19 August 2025): I received an email this afternoon and ClipCatch⢠has won an awardđ! I am happy that the judges were able to appreciate my invention.Â
P6 Interdisciplinary Project
Even though this was just a class project and a friendly competition among the Primary 6 classes, it left a deep impression on me. It was the first time I experienced how innovation isnât just about having a good idea. It is about understanding your audience, solving real problems, and presenting your solution in a way that makes people care. This project helped me realise how much I enjoy thinking creatively, working with a team, and turning ideas into something meaningful. Read more about my P6 Interdisciplinary Project.
